Week 8 Recap: History Repeats Itself

History sure did repeat itself quite a bit in Dynasty Owner Week 8. We have repeat winners as both Player of the Week and Value Player of the Week. And for the second week in a row, an undefeated team was highlighted, predicted to lose and then was actually defeated in our Match-up of the Week.

We are also repeating ourselves with our eighth Dynasty Owner weekly recap article. Just like the previous ones, we’ll look at what happened in the Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week, name a Dynasty Owner Player of the Week and a Value Player of the Week, and highlight a player at every position who should have been Active and one who should have been on your Bench.

All stats are based on the Standard Dynasty Owner scoring system as outlined in the updated Dynasty Owner Constitution. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring gives you .1 points for every yard rushing or receiving, .1 point for every 2 yards passing, 1 point per reception, 6 points for a rushing, receiving or passing touchdown and 2 points for a successful 2-point conversion (rushing, receiving, or passing). Interceptions or fumbles lost cost you 3 points, while a fumble that is recovered by the player’s team is a loss of only 1 point. Bonus points are available for 100-199 yards rushing (2 points), 200 yards rushing or receiving (6 points), 300-399 yards passing (1 point) and 400 yards passing (4 points). There is also a 3 point bonus for clutch scoring, which is a score that results in a lead change in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime. Kickoff and punt return touchdowns are worth 6 points for the player and kickoff and punt returns are worth .25 points for every 10 yards. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring for kickers gives you 1 point for every extra point, while a missed extra point will cost you 1 point. It’s 2 points for a field goal of between 0 and 39 yards, 4 points for a field goal between 40 and 49 yards and 5 points for a field goal of 50 yards or longer. A missed field goal of between 0 and 39 yards will cost you 3 points, while a miss of 40 yards or more is a loss of 2 points.

Dynasty Owner Player of the Week

Our Dynasty Owner Player of the Week is: Mike Evans

Mike Evans makes history by becoming the first player in Dynasty Owner history to win a second Player of the Week honor. Back in Week 3, Evans became the first non-QB to win this honor with 45.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. This week, Evans had 42.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (11 receptions, 198 yards, 2 receiving TDs) to just edge out two other non-QBs, Aaron Jones (41.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) and Cooper Kupp (41.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points), for the honor. Evans is one of the most expensive WR with an annual salary of $16.5 million for his Dynasty Owners, but for the second time, they are happily forking over that nearly $1.2 million per week for that many points. Despite setting a career-high with 220 yards receiving and getting the 6 point bonus that goes with it, Kupp’s 41.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance (7 receptions, 220 yards, 1 receiving TD) was narrowly edged out by Evans’ slightly better performance.

  • Week 8 Points: 42.8
  • Week 8 Salary: $1,178,571
  • Week 8 Cost per Point: $27,537

Congratulations Mike on being the first two-time, two-time Dynasty Owner Player of the Week!

Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week

Because this is Dynasty Owner and we’re all looking for value from the players on our roster, we also have the Value Player of the Week. This week’s Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week is: Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones also makes history by becoming the first player in Dynasty Owner history to win his second Value Player of the Week honor. Jones had 41.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (67 yards rushing, 7 receptions, 159 yards receiving, 2 receiving TDs). At his low $650,484 annual salary, Jones’ cost per point was just over $1,100 this week, not as low as his $907 cost per point from back in Week 5 when he scored 51.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, but still good enough to be the best value in Dynasty Owner. Cooper Kupp also received consideration for this award with his 41.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points for just $957,940 annually (or $68,424 per week over the 14-week Dynasty Owner regular season). However, Kupp’s cost per point of $1,669 was over $500 more per point than Jones this week.

  • Week 8 Points: 41.6
  • Week 8 Salary: $46,463
  • Week 8 Cost per Point: $1,117

Congrats to Aaron on your second of what could be many Value Player of the Week honors!

Players Who Should Have Been Active

Next, we look at those players who should have been in your Active lineups based on their performance in Week 8. We aren’t going to write that you should have started Christian McCaffrey, since he should always be in your Active lineup. Instead, these are players who might be Free Agents, on your Bench or Practice Squad, but likely weren’t Active in Week 8 when they should have been.

QB: Daniel Jones (NYG) – 38.4 points

After four straight weeks with less than 15 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, benching Daniel Jones seemed like a smart play. It wasn’t this week as Jones lit up the Detroit Lions defense for 38.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (322 yards passing, 13 yards rushing, 4 passing TDs, 2 fumbles – one lost). That was the best QB performance of Week 8 and while he is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues, many of his owners likely didn’t have him Active when they should have.

RB: Tevin Coleman (SF) – 39.8 points

Just three weeks after his 49ers teammate Matt Breida was the pick in this spot with 29.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, Tevin Coleman takes this honor for Week 8 with 39.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (105 yards rushing, 2 receptions, 13 yards receiving, 3 rushing TDs, 1 receiving TD). Who knows, maybe the remaining RBs on the 49ers roster, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, will appear here sometime in the future? Regardless, Coleman is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues, but most of his owners probably had him on the Bench when they should have had him Active.

Honorable mention for the second week in a row for Latavius Murray of the Saints. Another week without Alvin Kamara equals another 100+ yard rushing and 2 TD effort from Murray. His Dynasty Owners shouldn’t make him Active in Week 9 since the Saints are on bye, but they should have gotten his 38.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy point (102 yards rushing, 9 receptions, 55 yards receiving, 1 rushing TD, 1 receiving TD) effort in Week 8 into their Active lineups.

WR: Chris Conley (JAX) – 20.3 points

Cooper Kupp could have been the pick here, but he really should be starting every week (yes, even after two below average performances the past two weeks) and most of the other WRs who had big weeks were top players who should probably be in your Active lineup every week. Instead, we’ll highlight Chris Conley of the Jacksonville Jaguars who is owned in only 4% of Dynasty Owner leagues, yet managed to score 20.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (4 receptions, 103 yards receiving, 1 receiving TD) in Week 8. The couple of Dynasty Owners with Conley on their rosters should have had him Active.

TE: Ryan Griffin (NYJ) – 24.6 points

My friend and Jets fan Mookie texted me after Griffin’s first TD, said “Griffin is a beast” and asked me who has Griffin in fantasy. My response was “Griffin who?” which is not a bad response since Jets TE Ryan Griffin is not listed in the Dynasty Owner database yet. Don’t confuse him with Buccaneers backup QB Ryan Griffin who is listed, but incorrectly as a QB (don’t worry, bug reported). The Ryan Griffin on the Jets had 4 receptions for 66 yards and 2 receiving TDs to lead all TEs in Dynasty Owner fantasy points for the week.

Honorable mention to Darren Fells, who is listed in the Dynasty Owner database, but is only rostered in 15% of Dynasty Owner leagues. He should be rostered in more leagues as the 8th best TE so far in Dynasty Owner this year and only on the books for one year at $1.5 million. His 23.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points this week (6 receptions, 58 yards, 2 receiving TDs) was just behind Griffin and more of his owners should have made him Active against the Raiders.

K: Dan Bailey (MIN) – 14.0 points

For the second time this year, Bailey had 14.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in a game against an NFC East opponent. Back in Week 5, it was against the Giants on the road, while this week, it was at home against the Redskins on Thursday night. He also had 7.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points against the Eagles in Week 6. Bailey should have been Active this week and maybe again in Week 10 when he faces off against another NFC East opponent in the Dallas Cowboys.

Honorable mention to Adam Vinatieri who benefitted from the Dynasty Owner scoring rules in tying Bailey with 14.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Vinatieri had a 51-yard, game winning FG with 22 second left that awarded his Dynasty Owners eight Dynasty Owner fantasy points (5 points for a 50+ yard FG and the 3 point clutch scoring bonus). He would have had more points for his Dynasty Owners, but he missed a 45-yard FG.

Players Who Should Have Been on the Bench

For every player who should have been Active but wasn’t, we have some players who probably were Active, but were better left on your Bench. Here are some likely Active players who should have been riding your Dynasty Owner Bench in Week 8.

QB: Jacoby Brissett (IND) – 10.5 points

It was a pretty good week for good QBs as most of the QB who scored less than 10 Dynasty Owner fantasy points were guys who shouldn’t be in any Active lineups (Mitch Trubisky, Joe Flacco, Case Keenum, Kyle Allen). Therefore, the choice here is Jacoby Brissett who had 10.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (202 yards passing, 34 yards rushing, 1 fumble – lost). Based on his performance the previous week against the Texans (38.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points), he may have been Active for some of his owners when he should have been sitting on the Bench.

Dishonorable mention to Kyle Allen who had negative 1.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points this week. Despite being rostered in nearly half of Dynasty Owner leagues (46% to be exact), it is likely that few of his owners rolled the dice with Allen as Carolina was playing the 49ers defense. Leaving Allen on the Bench this week was the correct call for his Dynasty Owners.

RB: Derrick Henry (TEN) – 6.3 points

If you just looked at his 75 rushing yards, you would have thought Derrick Henry had a productive fantasy day. However, you’d be wrong as he only added 1 reception for 8 yards to his point total, but lost a fumble that cost him 3 points. Put it all together and it was just a 6.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy point effort from Henry in Week 8. With that performance, he was best left on the Dynasty Owner Bench.

Dishonorable mention to Le’Veon Bell who barely outscored Henry with just 6.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (23 yards rushing, 3 receptions, 12 yards receiving). Based on his performance this year, most Dynasty Owners should have Bell on the Bench. However, he is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues with an ADP of 66, so many of those owners who drafted him early are probably still putting him in their Active lineup every week. This is despite the fact that he has only exceeded 100 yards of total offense once this season (Week 2 versus Cleveland). He can probably be Active next week since the Jets play the Dolphins, but in Week 8, he should have been sitting on the Bench.

WR: Larry Fitzgerald (ARI) – 2.8 points

Fitzgerald had his second poor performance in a row in Week 8 as he only scored his Dynasty Owners 2.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (2 receptions, 8 yards) after turning in a 2.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy point effort in Week 7. In the first six weeks of the season, Fitzgerald averaged just under 15 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game and was probably a steady presence in his owners’ Active lineup. He hasn’t been good enough to be Active in the last two weeks and should have been on the Bench in Week 8.

TE: Zach Ertz (PHI) – 4.0 points

The Eagles dominated the Bills defense on the ground in Week 8 and as a result, Eagles TE Zach Ertz only had 4.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (2 receptions for 20 yards). Ertz was even outscored by fellow Eagles TE Dallas Goedert for the third consecutive week as Goedert had 11.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. As the 7th rated TE in Dynasty Owner, Ertz is a mainstay in his owners’ Active lineups, even though he should have been on the Bench this past week.

K: Eddy Pinerio (CHI) – 2 points

Pinerio missed a potential game winning 41 yard FG in the Bears 17-16 loss to the Chargers this week. As a result, he only scored his Dynasty Owners 2.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points by making 3 short FGs (19, 22 and 25 yards) and missing one additional FG attempt of 33 yards. He also made his only PAT attempt. However, it’s the potential game winner that will haunt Bears’ fans and his Dynasty Owners who lost a potential nine points on the missed FG (-2 points for the missed FG plus not earning 4 points for a 40-49 yard FG plus missing the 3 point clutch scoring bonus that would have went along with the made FG). Hopefully his Dynasty Owners in the 54% of leagues in which he is rostered kept Pinerio on the Bench.

Dishonorable mention to Stephen Hauschka of the Bills who had negative 2.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 8. Hauschka isn’t on many Dynasty Owner rosters, just 4%, so he couldn’t be Active in many leagues, but for those few owners who have him and made him Active, it was a bad move. He missed a 53-yard FG at the end of the first half, made his first PAT attempt and had the second one blocked. He should have stayed on the Bench in the handful of leagues in which he is owned.

Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week Recap

Miami Gladiators (Brian Auricchio) – 166.7 vs. Mafia Power 83 (Bruno Goncalves) – 139.5

History also repeated itself in our Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week as for the second consecutive week, an undefeated team lost. This time it was Mafia Power 83 losing to the Miami Gladiators in the highest-scoring Match-up of the Week so far this season. The Miami Gladiators also set the mark for highest individual team score in a Match-up of the Week, while Mafia Power 83 had more points than any losing team featured as well.

Both owners did a good job setting their lineup even though neither got the 3 point coaches’ bonus, which has yet to be awarded to a team in our Match-up of the Week so far this season. Bruno could have started Jamaal Williams over Todd Gurley and D.K. Metcalf over T.Y. Hilton and scored 16.7 more Dynasty Owner fantasy points for Mafia Power 83, but it still wouldn’t have given him the victory.

The Miami Gladiators stack of Jared Goff and Cooper Kupp from the Rams paid off big this week to the tune of 72.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, even as they only connected for one TD. Starting Jacoby Brissett over Russell Wilson and creating an Indianapolis stack for Mafia Power 83 would have cost Bruno points so he made the right move in keeping Brissett on the Bench. He would have benefitted from a Seattle stack of Wilson and Metcalf, but not enough to win, as mentioned previously.

My Miami Gladiators upset prediction was correct and I almost nailed the final score for Mafia Power 83 as I had guessed predicted they would score 139.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. My prediction record improves to 4-4 on this inaugural season of Dynasty Owner with my first chance to have a winning record since Week 1 coming up this week.
