Author: Steven Van Tassell

In a week that featured several strong performances by some of the NFL’s top players, such as Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott, we chose to highlight a team in our Match-up of the Week (New York’s Strongest) that featured a strong lineup from top to bottom. New York’s Strongest lived up to their name as they proved to be too strong for their opponent as well as the rest of us playing Dynasty Owner so far.

This is our eleventh Dynasty Owner weekly recap article. Hopefully, it’s a strong one. As usual, we’ll look at what happened in the Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week, name a Dynasty Owner Player of the Week and a Value Player of the Week, and highlight a player at every position who should have been Active and one who should have been on your Bench.

All stats are based on the Standard Dynasty Owner scoring system as outlined in the updated Dynasty Owner Constitution. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring gives you .1 points for every yard rushing or receiving, .1 point for every 2 yards passing, 1 point per reception, 6 points for a rushing, receiving or passing touchdown and 2 points for a successful 2-point conversion (rushing, receiving, or passing). Interceptions or fumbles lost cost you 3 points, while a fumble that is recovered by the player’s team is a loss of only 1 point. Bonus points are available for 100-199 yards rushing (2 points), 200 yards rushing or receiving (6 points), 300-399 yards passing (1 point) and 400 yards passing (4 points). There is also a 3 point bonus for clutch scoring, which is a score that results in a lead change in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime. Kickoff and punt return touchdowns are worth 6 points for the player and kickoff and punt returns are worth .25 points for every 10 yards. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring for kickers gives you 1 point for every extra point, while a missed extra point will cost you 1 point. It’s 2 points for a field goal of between 0 and 39 yards, 4 points for a field goal between 40 and 49 yards and 5 points for a field goal of 50 yards or longer. A missed field goal of between 0 and 39 yards will cost you 3 points, while a miss of 40 yards or more is a loss of 2 points.

Dynasty Owner Player of the Week

Our Dynasty Owner Player of the Week is: Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo loves playing against the Arizona Cardinals. In two games against them this year, he has accumulated 88.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, including 46.9 this week (424 yards passing, 7 yards rushing, 4 passing TDs, 2 INTs). The 25-yard passing TD to Jeff Wilson with 31 seconds left was the score that gave Jimmy G the 3-point clutch scoring bonus and vaulted him over 40 Dynasty Owner fantasy points for the second time against Arizona. Jimmy G did all of this scoring without his best receiver (George Kittle), so he really earned his nearly $2 million Dynasty Owner weekly salary in Week 11.

  • Week 11 Points: 46.9
  • Week 11 Salary: $1,964,286
  • Week 11 Cost per Point: $41,882

Congratulations Jimmy G. on winning your first Dynasty Owner Player of the Week honor!

Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week

Because this is Dynasty Owner and we’re all looking for value from the players on our roster, we also have the Value Player of the Week. This week’s Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week is: Dak Prescott

Surprisingly, this is Dak’s first Value Player of the Week honor, although he did win Player of the Week back in Week 1. As the #3 ranked QB in Dynasty Owner with a rock-bottom salary of $680,848 for this season, Prescott has been a strong contender several times for the honor, but has just missed out every time. That will change next year once he signs a new contract, so his Dynasty Owner should enjoy the value while it lasts. This past week, he scored 46.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (444 yards passing, 18 yards rushing, 3 passing TDs). He nearly won Player of the Week honors for the second time, but has to settle for Value Player of the Week with a cost per point in Week 11 of just over $1,000.

  • Week 11 Points: 46.0
  • Week 11 Salary: $48,632
  • Week 11 Cost per Point: $1,057

Congratulations Dak on your first Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week honor!

Players Who Should Have Been Active

Next, we look at those players who should have been in your Active lineups based on their performance in Week 11. We aren’t going to write that you should have started Christian McCaffrey because he is the #1 ranked RB and should always be in your Active lineup. Instead, these are players who might be Free Agents or on your Bench or Practice Squad, but likely weren’t Active in Week 11 when they should have been.

QB: Jeff Driskel (DET) – 33.6 points

In two games as the Lions starter, Driskel has accumulated a total of 55.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points with 33.6 of those points coming in Week 11 against the Cowboys. Driskel only threw for 209 yards, but had 3 TDs (2 passing and 1 rushing) as well as 51 yards rushing. His 33.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points was sixth best among QBs and easily the most unlikely. Driskel is only rostered in 2% of Dynasty Owner leagues and was highly unlikely to be Active.

Honorable mention to Jets QB Sam Darnold who had 34.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (293 yards passing, -3 yards rushing, 4 passing TDs, 1 INT, 1 fumble). While he scored 0.8 points more than Driskel, Darnold could have been Active in more lineups due to his 100% ownership and the fact that the Jets were playing the Redskins. The Redskins defense is not very strong, so hopefully Dynasty Owners with Darnold on their roster made him Active this week.

RB: Gus Edwards (BAL) – 19.2 points

Edwards ripped off a 63-yard TD run late in the Ravens 41-7 victory over the Texans to earn this spot. The 63 yard play was more yards than the backup to Mark Ingram had run for in a single game all season. All total, Edwards had 19.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (112 yards rushing, 1 rushing TD) for a mere cost of $570,000 in annual salary. Few of the Dynasty Owners in the 39% of leagues in which he is rostered likely had him in their Active lineup, even though he ended up the week tied for second in rushing yards (behind Johnathan Williams of the Colts) and sixth in Dynasty Owner fantasy points among RBs.

Honorable mentions to Tony Pollard (18.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) and Tarik Cohen (18.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) who each had a receiving TD this week. Pollard earned two points by running in a 2-pt conversion and an extra point from his 42 yards of kickoff returns to jump ahead of Cohen, who had more rushing yards (39 to 12 for Pollard) and receptions (5 vs. 4 for Pollard).

WR: Randall Cobb (DAL) – 21.5 points

Randall Cobb has a two-game streak of scoring 20+ Dynasty Owner fantasy points after this week’s 21.5 point performance (4 receptions, 115 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD). After a promising Week 1 with 16.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, Cobb didn’t score in double digit again until Week 10 (22.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). Dynasty Owners must have thought it was a mirage since nobody picked him and his $5 million annual salary up after his Week 10 performance. That was a mistake as some Owners could have really used him in their Active lineup this week.

TE: Ross Dwelley (SF) – 17.4 points

With the injury to George Kittle, Dwelley stepped into the 49ers Week 10 lineup and produced 5.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (3 receptions for 24 yards). In Week 11, Dwelley had one more reception but for 10 fewer yards. The difference was that he scored 2 TDs to give his few Dynasty Owners 17.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (4 receptions, 14 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs). A couple of Dynasty Owners took a chance and picked up Dwelley and his $525,000 salary for this year (2% ownership). Hopefully they made him Active.

K: Stephen Hauschka (BUF) – 13.0 points

After a dreadful week in which he scored -3.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points against the Browns, Hauschka came back with a strong performance in Week 11 versus the Dolphins. It was his second week with double-digit Dynasty Owner fantasy point this season – both against the Dolphins. Hauschka was perfect on the day, making all seven of his kicks (3 FGs and 4 PATs). He had two short FGs of under 39 yards (21 and 34 yards) plus a 51-yard FG worth 5.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points to give him a total of 13.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Not bad for a kicker who was not likely Active in many Dynasty Owner leagues since he is only rostered in 6.5% of them.

Players Who Should Have Been on the Bench

For every player who should have been Active but wasn’t, we have some players who probably were Active, but were better left on your Bench. Here are some likely Active players who should have been riding your Dynasty Owner Bench in Week 11.

QB: Deshaun Watson (HOU) – 3.7 points

Watson easily turned in his worst performance of the 2019 season this past week against the Baltimore Ravens, scoring only 3.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (169 yards passing, 12 yards rushing, 1 INT, 1 fumble – lost). Prior to the Texans’ Week 10 bye, Watson was averaging 30.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game, so his Owners can be excused for thinking that he was a solid every week Active QB. Unfortunately for them, that was wrong, and they should have kept him on the Bench.

RB: David Montgomery (CHI) – 6.0 points

This is two weeks in a row that Montgomery has scored just 6.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points after putting up consecutive 20+ Dynasty Owner fantasy point outings that had his Owners thinking he should be Active every week. It’s not because of a lack of touches, as Montgomery had 15 touches this week after having 17 touches the week before. He just hasn’t been doing much with the ball in his hands as he had just 31 yards rushing (on 14 carries) and 1 reception for 19 yards. With uncertainty at QB for the Bears, it may be advisable to Bench Montgomery for the foreseeable future. His Dynasty Owners would have been better off with him on the Bench in Week 11.

Dishonorable mention to trendy free agent pickup Brian Hill of the Falcons. Hill was rostered in 52% of Dynasty Owner leagues, probably because of his $600,000 one year contract as well as the fact that he was expected to be the lead RB for the Falcons and build on his 14.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy point effort from Week 11. With projections positive for a good week, many of his Owners likely had Hill Active and reaped only 4.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (30 yards rushing, 1 reception, 8 receiving yards) for it. He should have been on the Bench.

WR: Tyler Boyd (CIN) – 2.0 points

His Dynasty Owners might not have wanted to make him Active, but with injuries to several top WRs (Adam Thielen, T.Y. Hilton, Brandin Cooks) and more on bye (Davante Adams and Tyler Lockett), many of them might have been left with no other choice. These Owners were probably hoping he would replicate his 12.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance from Week 10 with Ryan Finley as the Bengals QB, but alas, Boyd would only score 2.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (10 yards rushing, 1 reception, 0 yards receiving). Leaving him on the Bench would have been the better play.

TE: Jack Doyle (IND) – 0.0 points

Doyle had been on a roll in the four games since the Colts bye, scoring an average of 9.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game. After being cleared to play earlier in the week and with Jacoby Brissett back in the lineup at QB, Doyle was expected to be a good TE to have in your Active lineup. Unfortunately for those Dynasty Owners who made him Active based on that information, Doyle was not targeted in the Colts 33-13 win over the Jaguars and ended up with a Blutarsky (0.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). He should have been left on your Bench or better yet, Practice Squad.

K: Joey Slye (CAR) – 2.0 points

Carolina kicker Joey Slye is the choice here even though several kickers had worse weeks than he did. However, the kickers who earned negative Dynasty Owner fantasy points this week (Eddy Pinerio, Josh Lambo and Chris Boswell) were likely not Active in too many lineups. In contrast, Slye is rostered in 65% of Dynasty Owner leagues and still the #11 ranked kicker after making his only FG attempt (31 yards) in Week 11.

Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week Recap

New York’s Strongest (Eddie Driscoll) – 178.1 vs. The Miracle Metcalfs (Andrew Wade) – 95.1

New York’s Strongest lived up to their name with a very strong performance this week against The Miracle Metcalfs, prevailing by a score of 178.1-95.1. New York’s Strongest showed the top to bottom strength of their Active lineup and also got strong performances by most of the players on their Bench in the easy victory.

The Miracle Metcalfs had a solid performance with 95.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points despite having Active QB Russell Wilson on bye. A recommended switch to Josh Allen in the Active lineup and moving Baker Mayfield from the Practice Squad to the Bench would have yielded them an extra 39.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points for a total of 134.6. Not enough to win, but the game would have been closer.

It turns out that Eddie was a little modest when naming his team. New York’s Strongest is a little bit off as they are really Dynasty Owner’s Strongest now, sitting at the top of the Chase for the Ring standings.

New York’s Strongest has a 47 point advantage over the second place team (Recyclers) in the Chase for the Ring standings. They made a strong move this week, moving from fourth place last week to first place behind their 178.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Eddie is in great position, but needs to finish strong over the next three weeks of the regular season and win his league in order to claim the Ring.

Even though I predicted a closer game, said it would be difficult for New York’s Strongest to win by the projected margin of 40 points and that they would have an “average” performance, their victory makes my Match-up of the Week prediction record 6-5 for the season. Check out our Week 12 preview article to see which teams are in the Match-up of the Week.
