Week 9 Recap: No Competition, but No More

The lack of competition in some Dynasty Owner leagues is ending as inactive Owners are being replaced with new ones. The competition should heat up in individual match-ups as well as in the Chase for the Ring since the winner of the Chase for the Ring has to win their league. Tougher league competition will make that more difficult to do. We also saw an uncompetitive Match-up of the Week, but that was mainly because the winning team (Recyclers) had two of the highest scoring players in their Active lineup this week. Future Match-ups of the Weeks should also be more competitive.

This is our ninth Dynasty Owner weekly recap article, but for many of you, it might be your first one as a new Dynasty Owner. To get you up to speed, here’s what we do in the weekly recap articles. We look at what happened in the Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week, name a Dynasty Owner Player of the Week and a Value Player of the Week, and highlight a player at every position who should have been Active and one who should have been on your Bench.

All stats are based on the Standard Dynasty Owner scoring system as outlined in the updated Dynasty Owner Constitution. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring gives you .1 points for every yard rushing or receiving, .1 point for every 2 yards passing, 1 point per reception, 6 points for a rushing, receiving or passing touchdown and 2 points for a successful 2-point conversion (rushing, receiving, or passing). Interceptions or fumbles lost cost you 3 points, while a fumble that is recovered by the player’s team is a loss of only 1 point. Bonus points are available for 100-199 yards rushing (2 points), 200 yards rushing or receiving (6 points), 300-399 yards passing (1 point) and 400 yards passing (4 points). There is also a 3 point bonus for clutch scoring, which is a score that results in a lead change in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime. Kickoff and punt return touchdowns are worth 6 points for the player and kickoff and punt returns are worth .25 points for every 10 yards. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring for kickers gives you 1 point for every extra point, while a missed extra point will cost you 1 point. It’s 2 points for a field goal of between 0 and 39 yards, 4 points for a field goal between 40 and 49 yards and 5 points for a field goal of 50 yards or longer. A missed field goal of between 0 and 39 yards will cost you 3 points, while a miss of 40 yards or more is a loss of 2 points.

Dynasty Owner Player of the Week

Our Dynasty Owner Player of the Week is: Russell Wilson

Despite being the top scorer in Dynasty Owner this season, this is Wilson’s first Player of the Week honor. There wasn’t a lot of competition for the honor as Wilson scored 15+ Dynasty Owner fantasy points more than anyone else. Wilson was incredible in the Seahawks 40-34 overtime victory over the Buccaneers with 57.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (378 yards passing, 21 yards rushing, 5 passing TDs, 1 2-pt conversion), including the three point clutch scoring bonus on his 10-yard TD pass in overtime. This week’s 57.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy point effort outshined his 53.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance from back in Week 3. His $21.9 million salary for 2019 is manageable, but it’s his $140 million, 4-year extension starting in 2020 that is causing Wilson’s ownership rate to be only 74%. His Dynasty Owners don’t mind the Week 9 salary, as they likely won their game if they had Wilson Active.

  • Week 9 Points: 57.0
  • Week 9 Salary: $1,564,286
  • Week 9 Cost per Point: $27,444

Congratulations Russell on being the top scorer in Dynasty Owner and securing your first Dynasty Owner Player of the Week honor!

Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week

Because this is Dynasty Owner and we’re all looking for value from the players on our roster, we also have the Value Player of the Week. This week’s Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week is: Preston Williams

In the Miami Dolphins’ first victory of 2019, they got a great performance out of rookie free agent WR Preston Williams. Williams gave it his all in the game versus the New York Jets and scored 24.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (5 receptions, 72 yards receiving, 19 return yards, 2 receiving TDs). He gave so much for so little salary (just $585,000 annually) that he tore his ACL in the fourth quarter and is out for the remainder of the year.

  • Week 9 Points: 24.5
  • Week 9 Salary: $41,786
  • Week 9 Cost per Point: $1,706

Williams edged out some tough competition this week from fellow pass catchers Jacob Hollister (22.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, $558,333 annual salary, $1,757 cost per point) and Tyreek Hill (26.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, $646,555 annual salary, $1,743 cost per point).

Congrats to Preston on your first Value Player of the Week honors! Hope the surgery on your torn ACL is successful and you’re back on the field next year.

Players Who Should Have Been Active

Next, we look at those players who should have been in your Active lineups based on their performance in Week 9. We aren’t going to write that you should have started Christian McCaffrey, even though he had 39.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, since he is the top RB in Dynasty Owner and should always be in your Active lineup. Instead, these are players who might be Free Agents or on your Bench or Practice Squad, but likely weren’t Active in Week 9 when they should have been.

QB: Jimmy Garoppolo (SF) – 41.1 points

Since it came way back on Thursday night, you might have forgotten about Jimmy Garoppolo’s 41.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance (317 yards passing, 2 yards rushing, 4 passing TDs). It was the second best performance by a QB after Russell Wilson in Week 9. Garoppolo is only rostered in 22% of Dynasty Owner leagues and even with that performance, he’s still the 21st ranked QB in Dynasty Owner, so few of his Owners probably had him Active when they would have been rewarded handsomely for doing so.

RB: Devin Singletary (BUF) – 23.0 points

Singletary came through for his Dynasty Owners for the second week in a row with 23.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (95 yards rushing, 3 receptions, 45 yards receiving, 1 rushing TD). With a match-up against the dreadful Washington Redskins and on the heels of a 14.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance in Week 8, there was a good argument that he should indeed be Active this week. Congratulations to those Dynasty Owners who had the foresight to do so and reaped the benefits of his performance this week.

WR: D.K. Metcalf (SEA) – 27.0 points

Both Tyler Lockett and Mike Evans had more Dynasty Owner fantasy points (40.5 for Lockett and 36.0 for Evans) than Metcalf, but Lockett and Evans should be Active every week, so Metcalf is the pick here. Metcalf has been very good for a couple of weeks, but just crawled into the Top 20 WRs after his 27.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance (6 receptions, 123 yards receiving, 7 yards rushing, 1 receiving TD, 1 2-pt conversion) in Week 9 against the Buccaneers. The rookie should have been Active.

TE: Jacob Hollister (SEA) – 22.7 points

It’s not surprising that we have another Seattle receiver here since Russell Wilson was the Player of the Week and threw for 5 TDs. Two of those TDs went to TE Jacob Hollister, including the game-winner in overtime to earn both of them the 3 point clutch scoring bonus. Hollister had 22.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (4 receptions, 37 yards, 2 receiving TDs) after only having 8.8 points combined in the previous two games. Hollister is available in every Dynasty Owner league right now for a low $558,333 annual salary, so he might be worth picking up if you need a TE in the coming weeks.

Honorable mention to Noah Fant who scored 20.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (3 receptions, 115 yards receiving, 1 receiving TD) after averaging only 5.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in the previous eight weeks. While he is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues, there probably weren’t a lot of owners with him in their Active lineup based on his season-long performance as well as having Brandon Allen starting at QB for the first time this season.

K: Harrison Butker (KC) – 20.0 points

There was no competition for Harrison Butker in this spot. Butker is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues, likely because he kicks for the Kansas City Chiefs and carries only a $510,000 annual salary. However, going into Week 9 action, he hadn’t scored double digit Dynasty Owner fantasy points in a single game since Week 1. So, his owners might have left him on the Bench based on performance combined with the fact that the Chiefs were without starting QB Patrick Mahomes. That was a mistake as he got his owners 20.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points behind his game-winning 44 yard FG as time expired plus FGs of 24, 45 and 54 yards and 2 PATs. His performance was nearly enough for him to be named Value Player of the Week (20.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, $510,00 annual salary, $1,821 cost per point). He should have been Active.

Players Who Should Have Been on the Bench

For every player who should have been Active but wasn’t, we have some players who probably were Active, but were better left on your Bench. Here are some likely Active players who should have been riding your Dynasty Owner Bench in Week 9.

QB: Gardner Minshew II (JAX) – 11.0 points

Minshew was seemingly in line to score a lot of Dynasty Owner fantasy points this week as he was facing the Houston Texans defense who was playing without J.J. Watt. However, Minshew didn’t produce in what might end up being his last start of the season as he had three turnovers (2 INTs and 1 lost fumble) to go along with 309 yards passing and 35 yards rushing. That only equals 11.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points and preferably a spot on the Bench or Practice Squad last week and in the future.

RB: Royce Freeman (DEN) – 2.4 points

Freeman was averaging 14 touches and 13.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in his three games prior to the Broncos’ Week 9 game versus the Browns, so his Dynasty Owners probably felt good about having him in their Active lineup. However, he only touched the ball six times on offense and scored just 2.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (15 yards rushing, 1 reception, -1 yards receiving). Freeman was best left on the Bench.

Dishonorable mention to Aaron Jones who was the Value Player of the Week just a week earlier. This past week, he only had 3.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (30 yards rushing, 1 reception, -1 yards receiving) against the Chargers and should have been on your Bench instead of in your Active lineup.

WR: Stefon Diggs (MIN) – 2.6 points

Surprisingly, Diggs should have been on your Dynasty Owner Bench if you own him as he only scored 2.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (12 yards rushing, 1 reception, 4 yards receiving) against the Chiefs. The Vikings played most of the game without fellow starting WR Adam Thielen, but still Diggs held down. Ultimately, he was outscored by Laquon Treadwell who had 8.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (3 receptions for 58 yards). This comes after Diggs had seemingly turned the corner on the season with 100+ yard receiving games three weeks in a row and in four out of his last five. It was not to be, and Diggs was probably Active, when he should have been on the Bench.

TE: Mark Andrews (BAL) – 4.1 points

There were other TEs with worse weeks, but Andrews is the #7 rated TE in Dynasty Owner, so most of his Owners likely had him in their Active lineup. Andrews didn’t play as much as fellow Ravens TEs Nick Boyle and Hayden Hurst and only had 4.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (2 receptions for 21 yards). This was probably only a one-week aberration and he should be in your Active lineup moving forward. However, for Week 9, he was better left on the Bench.

K: Jason Myers (SEA) – 1 point

There were 74 points scored in the Seahawks-Buccaneers game and it could have been more if Myers hadn’t missed two FGs and one PAT. Myers did convert two short FGs of under 39 yards (22 and 37 yards) and 2 PATs, but missed a PAT and two FGs, a 47-yarder and a 40-yarder at the end of regulation. Despite being the kicker for the high-scoring Seattle offense, Myers was best left on the Bench in Week 9.

Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week Recap

Recyclers (Chuck) – 183.5 vs. Pkoy (Pat) – 60.9

Pkoy was no competition for the Recyclers in the Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week, but then again, nobody was going to have much of a chance. The Recyclers scored 183.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, eclipsing the Miami Gladiators for highest individual team score in a Match-up of the Week. They also easily set a new record for largest margin of victory.

Chuck had two of the top scorers of the week on his Active roster in Tyler Lockett (40.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) and Christian McCaffrey (39.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). Chuck should have started his Buccaneers as not doing so cost him the 3-point Coaches’ Bonus. He had his Bench kicker (Matt Gay) and QB (Jameis Winston) outscore his Active kicker (Zane Gonzalez) and QB (Deshaun Watson).

Pat had a tough choice at RB between two New England Patriots and ended up sticking with Sony Michel when he should have switched Michel (4.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) with James White (16.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). He also missed out on additional points by keeping Dante Pettis (9.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) in his Active lineup instead of switching him out for either Davante Adams (11.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) or Jarvis Landry (17.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). It wouldn’t have mattered in terms of winning and losing, but Pkoy could have scored 30.7 more Dynasty Owner fantasy points had he set a perfect lineup.

The Bench scoring was very close as predicted in the Week 9 preview article (https://dynastyowner.com/2019/11/week-9-preview-bench-is-better), with the Recyclers barely edging out Pkoy with 16.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points from his Bench compared to 15.2 for Pkoy. This was very close to the projected 16.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points for both team’s Benches.

I didn’t overthink things, went with the Recyclers for the victory and now my prediction record stands at 5-4 for the season. It’ll get tougher with new Dynasty Owners and an increased level of competition coming up in Week 10 and onward, so I’ll have to work hard to keep making winning predictions.
