Week 3 Recap: Clutch

Author: Steven Van Tassell (@SteveVT33)

There were 13 NFL games on Sunday and in four of them, the winning team scored with under two minutes left in the game to win and stay undefeated. Buffalo, Chicago, Seattle and Tennessee all won this way. There were also two other games with game winning or game tying FGs at the end of the fourth quarter, giving the Lions their first victory of the season and helping the Eagles tie their game with the Bengals. This is exciting for the NFL and fantasy football players. These scores are even more exciting and important for Dynasty Owners because of one of the many Dynasty Owner innovations – the clutch scoring bonus. That’s right, if a player scores a TD or kicks a FG in the last final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime that results in a lead change, then the player gets a 3 point bonus. It’s mentioned on Page 7 of the Dynasty Owner Constitution and in the explanation of scoring in all of my articles that everyone probably skips reading.

Nine players got the clutch scoring bonus points this week – 4 QBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE and 2 kickers. Two of those players (Anthony Miller and Stephen Gostkowski) have multiple clutch scoring weeks with Gostkowski earning the bonus every week so far this season. Last week, Harrison Butker of the Chiefs had two clutch scoring bonuses for a total of 6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. They aren’t as common as they were this week, but clutch scoring is something different that can help determine the winner and loser of a Dynasty Owner matchup. Just ask Kyle Yates (@KyleYNFL) of the Fantasy Pros (https://www.fantasypros.com/) who won his matchup in our Experts league 153.7-151.3 over Jerry Donabedian (@JerryDonabedian) of Rotowire (https://www.rotowire.com/), a game in which Kyle’s team got a clutch scoring bonus from Josh Allen.

This is our third regular season Dynasty Owner weekly recap article for 2020. No clutch fantasy football article writing points, but plenty of this article was written late on Monday evening after the conclusion of Monday Night Football so many of these words would have qualified if that existed. Regardless of when it was written, this article will name a Dynasty Owner Player of the Week and a Value Player of the Week, highlight a player at every position who should have been one of your Starters and one who should have been on your Bench or Practice Squad. We’ll also look at what happened in the Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week, see if either team had some clutch scoring points, and take our weekly look at the Chase for the Ring standings.

All stats are based on the Standard Dynasty Owner scoring system as outlined in the updated Dynasty Owner Constitution. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring gives you .1 points for every yard rushing or receiving, .1 point for every 2 yards passing, 1 point per reception, 6 points for a rushing, receiving or passing touchdown and 2 points for a successful 2-point conversion (rushing, receiving, or passing). Interceptions or fumbles lost cost you 3 points, while a fumble that is recovered by the player’s team is a loss of only 1 point. Bonus points are available for 100-199 yards rushing (2 points), 200 yards rushing or receiving (6 points), 300-399 yards passing (1 point) and 400 yards passing (4 points). There is also a 3 point bonus for clutch scoring, which is a score that results in a lead change in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime. Kickoff and punt return touchdowns are worth 6 points for the player and kickoff and punt returns are worth 1 point for every 40 yards.

Standard Dynasty Owner scoring for kickers gives you 1 point for every extra point, while a missed extra point will cost you 1 point. It’s 2 points for a field goal of between 0 and 39 yards, 4 points for a field goal between 40 and 49 yards and 5 points for a field goal of 50 yards or longer. A missed field goal of between 0 and 39 yards will cost you 3 points, while a miss of 40 yards or more is a loss of 2 points. For the purposes of this article, ADP and Dynasty Owner ownership statistics were current as of September 28th.

Dynasty Owner Player of the Week

Our third Dynasty Owner Player of the Week for 2020 is: Russell Wilson

For the third week in a row, a different QB is the Dynasty Owner Player of the Week. Russell Wilson wins it this week after being close to winning the past two weeks. This week, he had 54.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (315 passing yards, 5 passing TDs, 22 rushing yards, 1 2-pt conversion) which included a bonus point for over 300 passing yards and the 3 point clutch scoring bonus for the 29-yard TD pass to D.K. Metcalf with 1:47 left in the Seahawks 38-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson has scored the most Dynasty Owner fantasy points (142.3) over the first three weeks and had the highest single scoring week of the season in Week 3. Not quite as good as back in Week 9 of last season when he had 57.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, but it was the best this week, just edging out Patrick Mahomes and his 52.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance (385 passing yards, 4 passing TDs, 26 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD) on Monday Night Football. However, Russell had those clutch scoring bonus points that put him ahead of Mahomes to help him win the Dynasty Owner Player of the Week honor.

  • Week 3 Points: 54.0
  • 2020 Salary: $35,000,000
  • Cost per Point: $648,148

Congratulations to Russell on winning the Dynasty Owner Player of the Week honor for the first time this season and the second time overall!

Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week

Because this is Dynasty Owner and we’re all looking for value from the players on our roster, we also have the Value Player of the Week. The third Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week for 2020 is: Alvin Kamara

In terms of value, running back is the position to find it in Dynasty Owner. For the third consecutive week, the Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week is a running back. This time, it’s Alvin Kamara and his $964,443 salary for 2020 who had a 44.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy point performance (58 rushing yards, 13 receptions, 139 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs) in Week 3. Rookie RB James Robinson of the Jacksonville Jaguars almost won this award with his 30.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (46 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, 6 receptions, 83 receiving yards) for just $763,333 in salary, for a cost per point of $24,703. Kamara had more points but also costs more in salary, just over $200,000, so Kamara’s cost per point was slightly lower than Robinson at $21,576 per point. He was the third RB taken on average (ADP 7.7) but so far is the clear #1 RB in Dynasty Owner after three weeks with a total of 106.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points.

  • Week 3 Points: 44.7
  • 2020 Salary: $964,443
  • Cost per Point: $21,576

Congratulations Alvin on winning the Dynasty Owner Value Player of the Week honor for first time!

Players Who Should Have Been Starters This Week

Next, we look at those players who should have been in one of your Starters based on their performance in Week 3. We aren’t going to write that you should have started Russell Wilson or Alvin Kamara because both of them should always be in your Starting lineup. Instead, these are players who might be Free Agents or on your Bench or Practice Squad, but likely weren’t Starters in Week 3 when they should have been.

QB: Ryan Fitzpatrick (MIA) – 30.8 points

He’s widely owned in Dynasty Owner (97% of leagues), but I can’t imagine a lot of Dynasty Owners riding with Fitzmagic as their week in and week out Starter at QB. His high ownership is likely the result of being one of the cheaper QBs around at only $5.5 million in salary for 2020. His first two games were dramatically different (3.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 1 versus New England, followed by 32.6 points versus Buffalo), which combined ranked him outside the Top 20 at QB. He’s now had two good performances in a row after scoring 30.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (160 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, 38 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD, 1 reception) against Jacksonville on Thursday night. He was the #9 QB in Week 3, so he should have been a Starter for most of his Dynasty Owners.

RB: Rex Burkhead (NE) – 34.8 points

Last week, I said that “it’s nearly impossible to trust a New England RB for fantasy purposes because you never know what Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels are going to do on a game-by-game basis.” This week was no different but for the opposite reason as last week as Dynasty Owners could have safely started two New England RBs and been happy. Rex Burkhead wins the honor this week, but Sony Michel was also worthy of having in your Starting lineup this week. Burkhead was impressive and did his best James White impersonation with 34.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (49 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, 7 receptions, 49 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD). Michel had 18.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (117 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 23 receiving yards) as well. Don’t expect this out of Burkhead, who is only owned in 34% of Dynasty Owner leagues, many more times but if you had Burkhead and trusted him enough to put him in your Starting lineup this week, then you reaped the benefits of his great performance.

WR: Justin Jefferson (MIN) – 30.5 points

Despite being drafted in the seventh round on average in Dynasty Owner leagues (ADP 80.7), Dynasty Owners with Justin Jefferson can be forgiven if they left him on the Bench or Practice Squad in Week 3. After all, he had scored just 12.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in the first two weeks combined. There wasn’t a lot of reason to suspect that he would erupt for 30.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (7 receptions, 175 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD) in Week 3 versus Tennessee. The 21-year old rookie first round draft pick from LSU was probably not in a lot of Starting lineups when he should have been.

Honorable mention to Cedrick Wilson of the Dallas Cowboys. The #4 WR in Dallas had 27.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (5 receptions, 107 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs). He is currently not on any Dynasty Owner rosters, so nobody had him in their Starting lineup in Week 3. Wilson can be had off the Free Agent Auction for a mere $540,000 for each of the next two seasons if you have an open roster spot and a minimal amount of salary cap room. He’s unlikely to outscore Michael Gallup, Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb many times in the future, but why not take the chance, especially if you have Gallup, Cooper or Lamb and one of them gets injured.

TE: Tyler Kroft (BUF) – 21.4 points

Even though Jimmy Graham outscored Kroft slightly (23.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points for Graham vs. 21.4 points for Kroft), the nod goes to Kroft because 3 of his points were clutch scoring points. Those came on his second 3-yard TD reception of the afternoon in the Bills come from behind 35-32 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Overall, Kroft had 4 receptions for 24 yards and the two receiving TDs for a total of 21.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Kroft gets the nod over Graham because he is only owned in 1% of Dynasty Owner leagues, compared to 2% for Graham. That’s what happens when you are making $4 million as a backup TE (or $8 million for Graham in each of the next two years). It’ll be interesting to see if many Dynasty Owners pick up Kroft after this performance.

K: Stephen Gostkowski (TEN) – 25.0 points

After missing his first three FG attempts as a member of the Tennessee Titans, Stephen Gostkowski has made his last nine attempts, including six in the Titans Week 3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The last one was a 55-yarder with 1:44 left on the clock to put the Titans up by one point. He’s had three consecutive weeks with a clutch game winning FG of progressive longer lengths (25 yards, 49 yards and 55 yards). In Week 3, he had three FGs of less than 40 yards (30, 31 and 39) plus three FGs of 50+ yards (51, 54 and the game winning 55 yarder). He also made his only PAT attempt after missing one in each of the first two games. Gostkowski is now the #1 kicker in Dynasty Owner with 38.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, including the -1 points he put up in Week 1. He is owned in less than half of Dynasty Owner leagues (48%) and will only cost $2.75 million in salary this season. He’s on a hot streak and if you need a kicker for your Starting lineup, then ride the hot hand and check if he’s available in the Free Agent Auction of your league.

Players Who Should Have Been on the Bench or Practice Squad

For every player who should have been one of your Starters but wasn’t, we have some players who probably were Starters, but were better left on your Bench or Practice Squad. Here are some likely Starters who should have been riding your Dynasty Owner Bench or hanging out on the Practice Squad in Week 3.

QB: Cam Newton (NE) – 13.8 points

After looking rejuvenated the first two weeks and scoring 27.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 1 and 40.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 2, lots of Dynasty Owners probably pulled the trigger on Starting Newton against the Raiders in Week 3. While Newton didn’t play badly, it’s just that New England didn’t need him to do as much this week as the last two weeks. As a result, he only scored 13.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (162 passing yards, 1 passing TD, 27 rushing yards, 1 INT) and should have been on your Bench or maybe even the Practice Squad if you’re carrying three starting QBs.

Dishonorable mention to Matt Ryan. Another guy who lit it up the first two weeks (35.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 1 and 39.3 in Week 2), but who didn’t produce in Week 3 with only 14.8 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (238 passing yards, 1 passing TD, -1 rushing yard, 1 INT). That’s not what Dynasty Owners want from a guy who is costing them $30 million in salary this year. He’s still easily in the Top 10 QBs and can probably be a Starter most weeks, just not this past week.

RB: Leonard Fournette (TB) – 4.2 points

With so many RBs out with injuries, it’s difficult to find healthy productive RBs to put in your Starting lineup, never mind your Bench as well. That’s why a lot of Dynasty Owners with Leonard Fournette got excited about his 29.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy point effort in Week 2 and probably inserted him into their Starting lineup for Week 3. Makes sense to put in a guy you may have drafted early before he got released by Jacksonville or later in drafts after he was released and signed by Tampa Bay. Nice try, but it didn’t work out for Fournette owners this week as he scored just 4.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (15 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 7 receiving yards) and should have been left on your Dynasty Owner Bench.

WR: Julian Edelman (NE) – 4.2 points

What a difference a week makes – part 1. One week after setting a career best in receiving yards with 179 on 8 catches (25.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) against the Seattle Seahawks, Edelman had just 4.2 points (2 receptions, 23 receiving yards, -1 rushing yards).  It wasn’t for lack of trying as he was targeted 6 times by QB Cam Newton, the most of any New England WR. He’s still the #20 ranked WR in Dynasty Owner after this Bench-worthy performance. He should be good to put back into your Starting lineup as a WR or FLEX in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

TE: Darren Waller (LV) – 2.9 points

What a difference a week makes – part 2. Waller was the #2 TE in Dynasty Owner after the first two weeks, but went out and scored just 2.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (2 receptions, 9 receiving yards) in Week 3. He was headed for a Blutarsky (0.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) until the final Raiders drive of the game when he caught those two passes. He’s still the #5 TE in Dynasty Owner after three weeks, so don’t go over-reacting and putting him on your Practice Squad just yet. It wasn’t his week against the Patriots, and he should have been on your Bench or Practice Squad, but maybe he’ll rebound against the Bills at home next week.

K: Harrison Butker (KC) – 1.0 points

Kansas City scored 5 TDs on Monday Night Football and Butker made 4 PAT attempts (4.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). However, he also missed one PAT (-1.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) as well as a 42-yard FG attempt (-2.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) near the end of the first half. Just a week after scoring 17.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points which included 6 clutch scoring points, he put up just 1.0 points this week. Butker has the lowest ADP of all kickers (167.4) so if you drafted him and his $4.055 million annual salary that high, you probably have him in your Starting lineup every week. In hindsight, this was the week to Bench him.

Dynasty Owner Matchups of the Week Recap

The Human Fund had themselves another great week, putting up 195.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points to win over the DC Dawgs by an impressive 88 points. The top Humans for the Human Fund this week were our Value Player of the Week Alvin Kamara (44.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points), QB Dak Prescott who had 39.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points and RB Nick Chubb who had 26.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Those three players had 109.9 points – enough to win the game by themselves. The Human Fund improves to 3-0 on the season, but were 195.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy points enough to keep them at the top of the Chase for the Ring leaderboard?

Chase for the Ring Leaderboard

It was not!  The Human Fund drops into second place in the Chase for the Ring as they were overtaken by All Might who jumped from second place into first place as behind 205.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 3. These two teams are dominating the Chase so far as the only two teams with more than 600 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (613.8 for All Might and 608.0 for The Human Fund) through three weeks of the 2020 season. They are both over 40 points clear of Keats McGee who occupies third place with 567.6 points.

Special shout-out to Entchev is Homeless who had 237.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 3 to jump into the Top 10 of the Chase for the Ring with 538.1 points and a 2-1 record. With over a thousand Dynasty Owners playing in leagues, it’s possible that someone had more points than Entchev this week. If that was you, then let everyone know by tweeting it and using the hashtag (#chaseforthering).

Conclusions

Many close games and clutch performances in Week 3 and hopefully there will be more in Week 4.
