Free Agent Auction Targets – Week 2

Man is it crazy how fast Week 1 has come and gone after waiting so long for it to arrive. Week 1 brought a ton of excitement along with it and before we get into today’s article, I want to highlight a few things that stuck out to me. The first thing was the improvement of Jalen Hurts as a passer. Yes, I know it was against a bad Falcons’ defense, but he can only play who is scheduled, and he looked great doing just that. The Steelers came out and made a statement beating the Bills in Week 1 with my main takeaway being do not overreact to Josh Allen struggling. The Bengals beat what I expected to be a decent Vikings team, but I have bad news for the fans of purple and gold. It is going to be a long season. Kyler Murray led the Cardinals into Nashville and beat the Titans in a bad way. Kyler for MVP this year is a real possibility after the way he just started off. In Jacksonville, things got sideways in a hurry and fast enough for me to believe Urban Meyer will only make it through this season. Meyer let Lawrence throw the ball 51 times in his rookie debut, despite being known as a coach who loves to run the ball. The last major takeaway I have is Baker Mayfield doing Baker Mayfield things. The Browns and Mayfield looked great to start but withered away in the end and watched a winnable game against the mighty Chiefs go out the window when Mayfield threw an ill-timed interception instead of throwing the ball away. I hope you all enjoyed Week 1, but it is now time to start getting your rosters ready to move on to Week 2.

Before I explain things with the article, I would like to highlight what makes dynasty owner different. In your regular or Superflex dynasty leagues, Elijah Mitchell (RB – SF) is the Number 1 free agent target by far after he scored 18.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (DOFP) going for 104 yards and a touchdown. However, in Dynasty Owner, he is owned in 92% of leagues because the competition is as sharp as you will find in the fantasy football industry.

Alright Dynasty Owners, we are back with another week of trying to find a diamond in the rough with the Free Agent Auction targets. The free agent articles/videos will be dropping every Tuesday afternoon in advance of when bids process on Wednesday at 5 AM and will consist of the week’s Top 5 free agent adds. I will do my best to keep the players listed at an ownership percentage of 65% or less and make sure all players have contracts of $8,000,000 or less, with most players coming in at under $4,000,000. One last note, in Dynasty Owner you will be credited each week with 25% of your entire Bench’s score making these weekly free agent pick-ups extremely important to help boost your total weekly score.

On to the top targets for Week 1:

  1. Deonte Harris (WR – NO) – 1 Year/$588,333 – 61.5% Rostered

Heading into Sunday, we were all thinking we would see Marquez Callaway be the unquestioned WR1 in New Orleans. As it often goes in the NFL, the rumors were wrong. If I am being completely honest, the Saints did not seem to think they had anything close to a Number 1 guy on their roster heading into the matchup against the Packers. The Saints ran the ball a total of 39 times Sunday and were effective doing so averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Out of the entire Saints receiving room, there is no doubt Harris flashed the most upside in Week 1. The other huge factor that elevates Harris to the Number 1 spot on the Free Agent Auction target list this week is the fact Jameis Winston played a turnover free game while throwing five touchdowns. If the Saints decide to let Winston air it out more as the season goes, Harris could be an absolute steal at his current salary.

  • Tim Patrick (WR – DEN) – 1 year/$3,384,000 – 43.8% Rostered

I do not know about you, but this feels like Déjà vu to me. In my Week 5 free agent article last year, I had Tim Patrick as the Number 1 free agent pickup and here we are again. Tim Patrick was supposed to take a big step back this season with Courtland Sutton returning from injury and Jerry Jeudy gaining another year of experience. Fast forward just one week and Tim Patrick may be set for a huge role in the Rocky Mountains. Courtland Sutton struggled big time in his return to the field signaling he may not be 100% just yet and it was evident when watching the game. Sutton was held to just 1 catch for 14 yards (2.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) on Sunday while Tim Patrick filled in for Jeudy admirably finishing with 4 catches, 39 yards and a touchdown (13.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). Patrick is not a player that will be producing all year, but you should get a great 3-5 game stretch out of him.

  • Zach Pascal (WR – IND) – 1 year/$3,384,000 – 38.5% Rostered

Up next we have the Dynasty Owner livestream MVP, Zach Pascal. A quick story on why I call Pascal the livestream MVP. As the 2020 off-season was winding down our fearless leader Tim, and Steve Van Tassell were doing a livestream and were both flabbergasted by one of the user’s comments which read “Zach Pascal will be the wr1 in all of football this season.” The reactions Tim and Steve gave were priceless. Pascal looked to be one of the focal points of the Colts offense in Week 1 seeing the most targets out of anyone on the team who does not play the running back position. Pascal turned the targets into 4 catches, 43 yards, and 2 touchdowns (20.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). If Pascal continues to be looked at in the redzone, he becomes an easy Bench play each week and a solid spot Starter.

  • Cordarrelle Patterson (RB – ATL) – 1 year/$3,000,000 – 49.1% Rostered

I have to say I feel like I need to go and take a bath after recommending that someone pickup Cordarrelle Patterson, but with as ugly as the Falcons running back room is he could end up a steal before the end of this season. Atlanta gave Patterson 7 carries to 15 for Mike Davis, but Patterson was by far the more effective back with his touches. If NFL defenses have figured out Mike Davis, look for Patterson to step into a big role. A quick note I want to touch on his how bad the Kyle Pitts pick looks for the Falcons at this point. The Falcons roster looks to be in shambles, and they wasted a potential cornerstone pick on a tight end who is going to need a year to develop fully. I bring this point up because if Davis and Pitts both continue their slow starts, there should be some sneaky value hidden on this roster.

  • K.J. Osborn (WR – MIN) – 3 years/$890,693 – 7.7% Rostered

K.J. Osborn was the biggest surprise of Week 1 coming away with 7 catches for 76 yards (14.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) on 9 targets. Osborn was tied with Justin Jefferson for the 2nd most targets for the Vikings offense on Sunday against Cincinnati and only behind Adam Thielen (10 targets). I am not sitting here saying Osborn is going to out produce either of these guys nor am I saying he is going to have an excellent season, but I do feel he can become a consistent Bench player for cheap. The Vikings defense looked horrible on Sunday and that only means more pass attempts from their offense as they will be playing from behind a lot. Another thing to watch out for with Osborn is if an injury were to happen to one of his teammates in front of him, then he will be thrust into a massive role. All of this should also be looked at carefully with the Bengals defense being just as bad as the Vikings.

Finally, we have an Honorable Mention this week:

  • Sammy Watkins (WR – BAL) – 1 year/$5,000,000 – 42.6% rostered

Had I written this article after the Monday Night Football game Watkins would be in the Top 5 for sure but since I did not, I will add him in now as an honorable mention and leave Osborn at Number 5. Watkins did exactly as the Ravens brought him in to do on Monday with 4 receptions for 96 yards (13.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). If he can stay healthy, he should be an excellent value at a $5,000,000 salary.

Conclusion

We had a wild Week 1 and for once we had no serious injuries. The games were all extremely competitive for the most part and should set us up for a great season to come. The last note I have is that the Steelers won, and the Browns lost which is enough for an amazing week in itself.
