Week 9 Surprise and Totally Predictable Event – Streaky

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

By Steven Van Tassell (@SteveVT33)

Less so than other sports, football is not a game of streaks. There’s not as much back and forth during the game as in basketball or hockey and players don’t go on multiple game hitting streaks like they do in baseball. Winning streaks, such as the 8-game winning streak by the Eagles, the 6-game winning streak by the Vikings, or even the 5-game losing streak by the Packers, are as common as in the other major sports though they are just shorter due to playing fewer games.

This Dynasty Owner season appears to be more streaky than usual. First, we had a streak of seven consecutive QBs winning Dynasty Owner Player of the Week, including six different ones in a row. Now, we are on a two-game streak by RBs. This assumes that no one has a better game than Joe Mixon’s ($12,000,000) 57.1 Dynasty Owner fantasy point eruption (153 rushing yards, 4 receptions, 58 receiving yards, 5 TDs). That’s a pretty same assumption, but check in tomorrow and see who the Dynasty Owner Player of the Week is for Week 9.

Pretty soon, it’ll be time to find out how many Dynasty Owner teams are undefeated and on a nine or ten game winning streak. Depending on when I start to give the number of undefeated teams. I think that going undefeated for an entire fantasy football season is one of the most difficult things to do since you can’t control how well the players perform. You can only project (or guess) about it, but don’t have any real impact on what happens for your team and absolutely no impact on your opponent’s team. Nobody’s Dynasty Owner team “plays great defense” like the Patriots did against the Colts on Sunday afternoon. We’ve only had three undefeated teams in Dynasty Owner history – our 2019 Chase for the Ring Champion New York’s Strongest and two teams in 2022 – DynastyTradeSchool in League #27458 and Detroit’s Finest in League #74733. We’ll see how many Dynasty Owner teams can have a 17-game winning streak this season and if the Philadelphia Eagles can do the same in the NFL.

For the purposes of this article, ADP and Dynasty Owner rostered percentage statistics were current as of the morning of November 7th.

Surprise of the Week – Smith Supports Several Seahawks as Starters

This section is where I highlight one fantasy football surprise of the week. It’ll be something that nobody really saw coming. It could be a good or bad surprise depending on the week.

It’s Week 9 so I shouldn’t continue to be surprised by this, but continue to be week after week. It’s the fact that Seahawks QB Geno Smith ($3,500,000) is supporting at least three of his fellow Seahawks and making them Dynasty Owner Starters on a weekly basis. This week, it was actually four players as Kenneth Walker ($2,110,395) had 29.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, Tyler Lockett ($17,250,000) had 17.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, DK Metcalf ($1,146,513) had 14.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, and Noah Fant ($3,147,680) had 14.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. All of them, as well as Smith who had 26.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, were worth having in your Starting lineup.

The consistency of Tyler Lockett is also a surprise. He has always finished well in the overall rankings at the end of the season (WR15 in 2021, WR8 in 2020 and WR12 in 2019), but it’s always been boom or bust with him. As you can see, he has been scoring more in the 10.0 to 19.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy point (DOFP) range this season than in any other prior Dynasty Owner season.

YearLess than 5.0 DOFP5.0 – 9.9 DOFP10.0 – 14.9 DOFP15.0 – 19.9 DOFP20.0 – 29.9 DOFP30.0+ DOFP

Lockett has six games with 10.0 to 19.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points already this season through nine games, compared to just five in each of the past two seasons in which he played 16 games. There are also fewer games with less than 10.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points than in the past. In each of the past three seasons, Lockett has had a minimum of six of those games and so far through nine games, he has only two of them. It is true that his Dynasty Owners are losing those high-scoring games (20.0 or more Dynasty Owner fantasy points) that can almost single-handedly win a weekly match-up, but keeping down the low-scoring games that can cost you a weekly match-up is just as important.

Lockett has put together a four-game streak of 10.0 or more Dynasty Owner fantasy points this season and currently has a three-game streak after this week. He hadn’t scored 10.0 or more Dynasty Owner fantasy points in three consecutive games since back in Weeks 5-9 of the 2019 season. Lockett is on a good streak of productive games right now and pretty much for almost the entire season.

In addition, the Seahawks are fourth in scoring in the NFL with 26.8 points per game. They finished right in the middle of the pack last year with 23.2 points per game and weren’t expected to be better after trading Russell Wilson ($35,000,000) to Denver and having a training camp competition at QB between Smith and Drew Lock ($1,752,704). Smith won the job, and the Seahawks haven’t looked back, scoring over 20 points in six games and over 30 points in four games. They are 6-3 and in first place in the NFC West with a 1.5 game lead over the San Francisco 49ers. I can safely say that nobody predicted that. The fact that the Seahawks are playing this well so far is a complete surprise.

Honorable surprise to the New York Jets. J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. After defeating the Buffalo Bills in Week 9, you didn’t I would forget to mention them, did you?

Totally Predictable Event of the Week – Rookie Tight Ends Continue to Produce

This section is where I highlight one totally predictable thing that might be surprising to other people, but might be something that I’ve been believing and saying for a while, but nobody’s been listening or agreeing with me on it. This week is a repeat as I mentioned the same topic in my weekly recap article for Week 6.

It does deserve to be repeated as it continues to happen. Rookie TEs are really contributing to the success of their Dynasty Owner teams this season. It took the rookie TEs a few games to get up to speed, but we’ve had at least one rookie TE with a double-digit Dynasty Owner point performance every week since Week 3 and two or more every week since Week 5. Back in Week 6, we had four rookie TEs who were worth being in your Dynasty Owner Starting lineup. The current streak of two or more double-digit Dynasty Owner point performance by a rookie TE is in danger in Week 9 as only Cade Otton ($1,123,486) has done it so far. Isaiah Likely still has to play and with Mark Andrews ($14,000,000) is out for the Ravens. I’m optimistic that the streak will continue.

There were a lot of TEs drafted in the Dynasty Owner TE sweet spot of the third or fourth round of the NFL Draft. This put their Dynasty Owner salaries in the range from Jelani Woods ($1,343,118) to the previously mentioned Isaiah Likely  and Chigoziem Okonkwo ($1,041,085). In redraft leagues and even in some shallower regular dynasty leagues, these rookie TEs may not have been drafted. However, in Dynasty Owner, there were a dozen rookie TEs with a listed ADP and five with a listed rookie draft ADP. You need to have the right rookie TE, but if you took a flyer or two, you may already have at least one of them on your Dynasty Owner roster (even if you didn’t draft them).

Finally, I’m not surprised by the rookie TE production this year because several of them were drafted into good situations. In Denver, Greg Dulcich ($1,314,785) was drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft by a team with a QB who likes to throw to TEs, but without an established veteran TE. Sorry to all of Dynasty Owners who drafted or had Albert Okwuegbunam ($1,011,011) on their roster, but he was not established. The Giants took Daniel Bellinger ($1,113,276), had a wide open starting TE spot and by early August, Bellinger was getting the majority of the first-team reps at TE. Tampa Bay drafted two rookie TEs, Cade Otton with the first pick of the fourth round and Ko Keift ($948,004) with a sixth round supplemental pick, so you had a feeling that they were looking for TE help with the “retirement” of Rob Gronkowski. Something tell me that the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady ($15,000,000) wanted reinforcements because he wasn’t sold on Cameron Brate ($6,800,000) as his top TE. Finally, I’ve mentioned Isaiah Likely already, but he had a great pre-season and was expected to contribute even with Andrews at TE for Baltimore because of the team’s lack of proven options at WR.

The fact that a few rookie TEs are playing well for their Dynasty Owners is something that I thought was totally predictable. It has started to play out over the course of the 2022 season and will continue to do so as the season moves along.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading about this surprise and totally predictable event. If your Dynasty Owner team is on a winning streak, then congratulations are in order and hopefully it means that you are on your way to the playoffs. If your team is on a losing streak, hopefully it’s a short one and you still have time to turn things around and get to the playoffs. If you really want that bonus rookie draft pick for winning the Loser’s Bracket tournament, then hopefully you go on a two or three game winning streak at the end of the season. Same if you’re looking to win your League Championship.
