Week 6 Preview – The Benefits of Having a Full Roster

By Steven Van Tassell (@SteveVT33)

It’s Week 6 and the bane of every Dynasty Owner is upon us – bye weeks. Your Dynasty Owner Starting lineup and Bench need to be scrubbed of any Lions, Raiders, Texans, and Titans if you want your best chance of winning this week. This is the start of when Dynasty Owners need to be nimble with their roster to maximize the available roster spots and salary cap so that they don’t take automatic zeros from a player on bye. This happens for every remaining week of the Dynasty Owner regular season including Week 14, except Week 12 (aka Thanksgiving week when all 32 teams play).

Using a player on bye is going to happen to some Dynasty Owners. The impact of this could be minimal and not hurt at all, or it could be a critical flaw to your Dynasty Owner team’s success. Getting an automatic zero from a Bench player can cause your Dynasty Owner team to lose its weekly game and that loss might be the difference between making or missing the playoffs, or being in the top 2 and having a playoff bye (and guaranteeing yourself some money in cash prize pool leagues) versus having to play in the first round of the playoffs. If you are in the Top 25 of the Chase for the Ring standings or close to it, you can’t afford to lose those crucial Bench points, regardless of whether or not you win your game.

In many other dynasty leagues, the roster sizes are large enough (30+ players) and the Starting lineups are small enough (8-10 players) that managers don’t need to worry about having someone score an automatic zero because they are on bye. That’s not the case in Dynasty Owner!

While you can have up to 30 players on your Dynasty Owner roster (plus 3 additional players on Injured Reserve), you still need to abide by the $145.74 million salary cap. If you have 29 players, but $500,000 or less in salary cap room, there’s nobody you can pick up in the Free Agent Auction who’s going to help your Dynasty Owner team. And if you try and add a player to go over the salary cap, you won’t be able to make a Free Agent Auction bid. You’ll need to drop someone first (or make it a conditional drop that happens if you win the bid). Otherwise, the bid won’t be validated.

For new (and some returning) Dynasty Owners, it’s time to educate and help them understand some best practices, or tips, to help them maximize their roster and score as many Dynasty Owner fantasy points as they can every week. The first step is to make sure that you add players to your roster after your startup draft. Dynasty Owners only draft 25 players, but can have up to 30 players on their roster plus three additional players on Injured Reserve status. You don’t need to do that right away after the draft, or even immediately after reading this article. However, you do need to do it if your Dynasty Owner team is in danger of having a player score zero Dynasty Owner fantasy points on your Bench.

Some Dynasty Owners don’t see the need to draft, or even have three kickers, but when the bye weeks roll around and the only available kickers all have salaries of $3,000,000 or more, it may not be possible to add that extra kicker. You could do it but not without dropping someone who your team might need later on, or want to hold on to for next year. It is a dynasty league after all. The same thing can happen at QB, if you don’t have three of them or if one (or more) of your QBs get injured. It’s even worse at QB as your options are generally more limited and more expensive with QBs like Jared Goff ($33,500,000), Carson Wentz ($32,000,000), Matt Ryan ($30,000,000) and Ryan Tannehill ($29,500,000) as your most likely options if you want a QB who will play and score some Dynasty Owner fantasy points. It’s not worth drafting those players to be your third QB or picking them up as just a bye week replacement, which is why your team should be getting three Starting QBs in the draft or picking up a cheap backup QB after the draft is over.

Because of injuries and bye weeks, Dynasty Owners are likely going to need more than 25 players to survive a Dynasty Owner season since 15 players score points every week (8 Starters and 7 Bench). You may not think so, but remember this in Week 9 and Week 14 when six NFL teams are on bye, your roster has only one QB and kicker playing, and you need to win to make the playoffs. Or need points to stay in the Chase for the Ring.

Both of the teams featured in this week’s Match-up of the Week are new Dynasty Owners in a start-up league. Both are undefeated and doing great at drafting and setting their weekly Starting lineup and Bench. One is even on the Chase for the Ring leaderboard. However, both are having trouble (in my opinion) with the finer points of Dynasty Owner roster management, such as struggling to fill out a full roster of Starters and Bench players for the first week with NFL teams on bye, or making a poor decision that cost them Dynasty Dollars and potentially a player who could help their team in the future just to get their team to full strength for the week. Check out the Match-up of the Week section to find out which league and teams are being featured.

Thanks for reading my weekly preview article and for being a Dynasty Owner. If this is your first time reading my preview article, here’s what to expect. Every week of the 14-game Dynasty Owner regular season and three game playoffs, I’ll present a player at each position (QB, RB, WR, TE) who you should have as a Starter in your Dynasty Owner lineup. These won’t be the obvious choices. No recommendations to go ahead and start Josh Allen, Austin Ekeler, Cooper Kupp, or Mark Andrews. Those guys are cemented in your Starting lineup unless something bad happens, or they are on bye. Players who are rostered in 100% (or nearly 100%) of Dynasty Owner leagues with low ADPs and top rankings so far this season won’t be mentioned either. Nope, I’m going to recommend you Start players who were drafted to be on your Bench or Practice Squad or haven’t played well yet. Think about the players who aren’t on a roster in every Dynasty Owner league, or have high ADPs and could be found after the 15th round in a typical Dynasty Owner startup draft, but haven’t played well through the first five weeks of the season.

After that, I’ll name one player per position who should be on your Bench or Practice Squad. For these Bench recommendations, it’s just the opposite. I’ll suggest players drafted early in Dynasty Owner startup drafts to be Starters with the low ADP to prove it who have likely done well so far this season. However, they shouldn’t be in your Starting lineup for the week based on matchups, past performance against a team or something else.

All stats cited are based on the Standard Dynasty Owner scoring system as outlined in the Dynasty Owner Constitution. Standard Dynasty Owner scoring gives you .1 points for every yard rushing or receiving, .1 point for every 2 yards passing, 1 point per reception, 6 points for a rushing, receiving or passing touchdown and 2 points for a successful 2-point conversion (rushing, receiving, or passing). Interceptions or fumbles lost cost you 3 points, while a fumble that is recovered by the player’s team is a loss of only 1 point. Bonus points are available for 100-199 yards rushing (2 points), 200 yards rushing or receiving (6 points), 300-399 yards passing (1 point) and 400 yards passing (4 points). There is also a 3 point bonus for clutch scoring, which is a score that results in a lead change in the final two minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime. Kickoff and punt return touchdowns are worth 6 points for the player and kickoff and punt returns are worth 1 point for every 40 yards.

For the purposes of this article, ADP and Dynasty Owner roster percentage statistics were current as of the morning of Saturday, October 15th.

These Guys Should be Starters This Week

Now it’s time to find out how my Week 5 recommendations fared (Good, Bad or Just Ok). I predicted performances worthy of being in your Dynasty Owner Starting lineup for these four players.

QB: Carson Wentz (WAS – $32,000,000) – 26.4 (Good recommendation)

RB: Raheem Mostert (MIA – $2,125,000) – 21.2 (Good recommendation)

WR: Robert Woods (TEN – $16,250,000) – 7.7 (Bad recommendation)

TE: Taysom Hill (NO – $10,000,000) – 39.0 (Good recommendation)

Best week of the season so far for Starting lineup recommendations. Three Good recommendations and one only Bad recommendation that wasn’t completely awful. The best recommendation of the season so far definitely has to be recommending Taysom Hill as a Starting TE last week. Hill had 39.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points and outscored Travis Kelce ($14,312,500) who had 4 TDs!

Happy to report that Carson Wentz and his 26.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points was enough to get my first Good Starting QB recommendation. Raheem Mostert had 21.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in a great week for RBs, but he was still in the top 15, so that was Good. Recommending Robert Woods was Bad as he had just 7.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. I still have yet to have a Good WR recommendation so that I can have one at every position. That’s not great heading into Week 6, but it is what it is.

Two weeks in a row with multiple Good recommendations and my Good recommendation percentage is up to 30%. Still worse than acceptable, but better than after three weeks when my Good percentage was 8% (1 out of 12). For some reason, all of my recommendations this week play for teams in either the AFC or NFC West. Not sure if that will impact anything, but it’s interesting. Let’s check out these Week 6 recommendations:

Jimmy Garoppolo (SF – $7,000,000): As a big Jimmy G fan and former Fan Club President, the biggest surprise is that it took me this long to have him here. I guess I must have been waiting for his best game of the 2022 season (23.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 5 versus Carolina) and another matchup against a weak NFC South opponent in Atlanta. The Falcons’ pass defense is ranked 29th in passing yards allowed (278.2 per game) and 28th in completion percentage (68.7%). Both are worse than Carolina who Jimmy G had 253 passing yards and 2 passing TDs against last week.

Jimmy is ranked QB23 with 72.4 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in four games played (18.1 per game). If he had played in all five games with the same average, he would only move up the QB rankings four spots to QB19 between Aaron Rodgers ($33,500,000) and Daniel Jones ($6,416,014). Not bad for a guy who wasn’t allowed to work out with the rest of the 49ers team for most of the pre-season.

Now that he’s the clear starting QB in San Francisco and had a couple of games to settle in, he should play even better than he has so far this season. This includes playing well enough in Week 6 to be worth having in your Dynasty Owner Starting lineup.

Darrell Henderson (LAR – $1,053,001): I was trying to figure out who to put in this spot then heard the news that Cam Akers ($1,543,258) was going to be out this week due to “personal reasons”. My first thought was hopefully all is well with Akers’ family and mental health. Coming in second was getting Akers out of my Dynasty Owner lineups. Third was checking my non-Dynasty Owner leagues and seeing if Henderson is available in the redraft leagues with shallow rosters (he wasn’t). Fourth was seeing if by any miracle, Henderson was available in the Free Agent Auction in any of my Dynasty Owner leagues. Don’t bother, I’ll save you the trouble and let you know Henderson is rostered in 100% of Dynasty Owner leagues.

Now, comes the part where I explain why Henderson should be in your Dynasty Owner Starting lineup. The Rams should be able to easily defeat the Carolina Panthers with Phillip Walker ($895,000) as their Starting QB. In fact, I think they will be up quite a bit and be able to run the ball frequently late in the game. Henderson is averaging 4.1 yards per carry (34 carries for 138 rushing yards). Carolina is allowing an average of 4.3 yards per carry with opposing teams averaging 32 rushes per game against them, which is the fourth highest in the NFL. That means the Rams should have around 140 rushing yards on Sunday and Henderson should get the vast majority of them plus a couple of receptions and maybe a TD. That’ll be enough to have him in your Week 6 Starting lineup.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling (KC – $10,000,000): I may be losing one of my best talking points about why I don’t like Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS). It’s always been his boom or bust tendencies, which makes him difficult to project with any kind of precision. As a result, I always felt MVS was best left for Best Ball leagues, in which you don’t need to set a lineup and the points for your highest scoring players per week count. This has also been the case for Tyler Lockett ($17,250,000) over the past few years as well. Both of them are putting this reputation behind them after off-season QB changes. Lockett is WR8 in 2022 so he obviously can’t be listed here. Since MVS is WR51, he can though.

MVS has been doing the same thing as Lockett, just with lower point totals (8.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game vs. 16.4 for Lockett), no TDs (Lockett has two, both coming last week), and no high game so far. That last point ends this week as MVS should do as well or better than his best week of the season so far (15.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 5). In his Dynasty Owner career, MVS has played 48 games and only in six of them did he have between 7.0 and 10.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. He has just as many games with more than 20.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (and eight if you expand it to more than 19.0 points) and seven games with a Blutarsky (0.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points). This year, he has scored between 7.0 and 10.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points on three occasions and can pretty much be relied upon to score points on a weekly basis. All he needs is his first TD reception from Patrick Mahomes ($45,000,000) and he’ll be worth having in your Starting lineup. That’ll happen this week in an absolute shootout with Buffalo so get MVS into your Starting lineup.

Eric Saubert (DEN – $1,187,500): The two worst teams in the NFL in yards allowed to TEs are the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks who play each other this week. However, the top TEs for each team, Zach Ertz ($10,550,000) for Arizona and Will Dissly ($8,000,000) for Seattle, are in the top 12 TEs. Yes, that’s correct. Will Dissly is TE12 in Dynasty Owner with 45.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. I could always pick Noah Fant ($3,147,680) as he has scored 29.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points (5.9 per game) to rank as TE21, but he’ll need to score a TD.

Instead, I’ll go with Eric Saubert from Denver who is leading the Denver TEs in snaps (161) targets (13), and receiving yards (83) and is tied for the lead with 7 receptions. Out of the four Denver TEs who have played so far this season, he has the only TD. The Broncos’ Week 6 opponent are the Los Angeles Chargers who have given up 299 receiving yards to TEs so far this season without a TD, the most TE receiving yards without a TD. Saubert had 7 targets in Week 5 and 8.6 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. The next best Denver TE weekly performance was Week 1 by Albert Okwuegbunam ($1,011,011) who had 6 targets and 8.3 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Saubert had the best week in Week 2 when he had a 22-yard TD reception and 9.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points. Saubert will get enough targets to have a couple of receptions plus add in a TD to hit double-digit Dynasty Owner fantasy points and be worth a spot in your Starting lineup.

These Guys Should Be on the Bench (or Practice Squad) This Week

Now it’s time to look at how my Bench recommendations from Week 5 worked out (Good, Bad or Just Ok). A majority of my Bench recommendations were Good through four weeks, but the Bad recommendations caught up a little bit. Am I still above a majority after five weeks? Let’s find out and remind everyone of my Week 5 recommendations.

QB: Matthew Stafford (LAR – $27,000,000) – 13.4 (Good recommendation)

RB: Breece Hall (NYJ – $2,253,694) – 27.7 (Bad recommendation)

WR: Amari Cooper (CLE – $20,000,000) – 20.6 (Bad recommendation)

TE: Pat Freiermuth (PIT – $1,507,045) – 3.2 (Good recommendation)

An even split, so I’m still above a majority. The QB and TE Bench recommendations of Matthew Stafford and Pat Freiermuth were Good, and those positions continue to fuel my solid record. On the negative side, both Breece Hall and Amari Cooper had more than 20.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points and a Bench recommendation with that many points (pretty much regardless of position) is always going to be Bad. I’ve had at least one Good Bench recommendations for the fifth straight week. If I can make it six in a row, my record cannot have more Bad than Good recommendations. That’s a low bar, but hopefully I can do it with these Week 6 recommendations.

Lamar Jackson (BAL – $23,016,000): After starting off the season with three consecutive great games (131.7 Dynasty Owner fantasy points, or 43.9 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game), Lamar Jackson has struggled in his past two outings. He has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in his past two games with only one passing TD in each game and no rushing TDs. He had 14.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 4 versus Buffalo and 17.5 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 5 versus Cincinnati. Another outing like those two will make Jackson a Bench QB for three weeks in a row.

This will happen, especially since Ravens leading WR Rashod Bateman ($3,149,853) is out for the second consecutive week. He was injured and didn’t play in the fourth quarter of Week 4 and didn’t suit up in Week 5 and the lack of Bateman has definitely impacted Jackson’s fantasy production. In Week 4, Jackson had 16.25 Dynasty Owner fantasy points through three quarters and -1.75 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in the fourth quarter.

The New York Giants defense has held opposing QBs to an average of 18.2 Dynasty Owner fantasy points per game. Admittedly, the best QB they have played is Aaron Rodgers and he’s ranked as QB18. Even then, Rodgers only had 22.1  Dynasty Owner fantasy points against them last week. Ryan Tannehill had the best performance with 26.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points in Week 1. The Giants defense has kept games close and low scoring. That’s what I think will happen this week, thus keeping Lamar from being a Dynasty Owner Starting QB.

Christian McCaffrey (CAR – $16,015,875): While Baker Mayfield ($18,858,000) hasn’t been much of a QB upgrade for Carolina over last year with Sam Darnold ($18,858,000), he’s better than this week’s QB for the Panthers, Phillip Walker. I was actually one of the few Dynasty Owners who had Walker last year and disappointed when the Panthers re-signed Cam Newton who stepped in and accounted for two TDs in Walker’s first start. Having Walker as the QB will mean that the Rams defense can focus even more on Christian McCaffrey. Not that the Rams’ run defense needs any additional help. They have allowed 448 rushing yards to RB, which ranks 20th in the NFL, but are really doing well keeping RBs from catching passes. They have only allowed 15 receptions for 101 receiving yards to RBs through five games. Half (51%) of McCaffrey’s Dynasty Owner fantasy points so far this season have come in the passing game, which is consistent with his career average. The Rams’ defense should pretty much take away that half of McCaffrey’s game and since I expect Carolina to be trailing in this game (see earlier section about Darrell Henderson), that should largely take away the running part of his game. It’ll be tough for McCaffrey to overcome a lack of carries and receptions, so I’d put the RB5 for the season so far on my Dynasty Owner Bench if you have better options.

Tyreek Hill (MIA – $18,000,000): Foot injury plus third string QB equals putting Hill on your Bench. Other fantasy analysts will say you should temper your expectations for Hill and Jaylen Waddle ($6,771,498) with Skylar Thompson ($935,554) at QB, but I think they are just hedging and trying to avoid saying that you shouldn’t play Hill (or Waddle).

The foot injury caused Hill to miss the end of last week’s game, but he doesn’t have an injury designation heading into the game. Not sure that I trust the Miami training staff and Hill’s injury status after the debacle with Tua Tagovailoa ($7,568,859) so I wouldn’t be surprised if Hill is really injured and limited, or if he reaggravates the injury.

On to Thompson who Hill caught 7 passes for 47 receiving yards from last week, which is only 6.7 yards per catch. That’s not exactly Hill’s usual game. For the first four games, he averaged 15.4 yards per catch and his career average is 13.8 yards per catch. Overall, Thompson averaged 8.7 yards per completion and 5.0 yards per pass attempt. In contrast, Tua and Teddy Bridgewater ($6,500,000) averaged 13.1 yards per completion and 8.7 yards per pass attempt. Thompson is easily the worst QB that Hill has ever played with in the NFL. Those are the reasons why I would do more than just temper my expectations for Hill and put him on the Bench for your Dynasty Owner team.

Tyler Conklin (NYJ – $6,750,000): I feel like this is almost a freebie and honestly I probably deserve it after picking Lamar Jackson, Christian McCaffrey and Tyreek Hill already. Until I start putting degree of difficulty like diving or ice skating, it doesn’t really matter as long as the player fits the criteria, which Tyler Conklin does. He is the overall TE13 for the Dynasty Owner season, but with T.J. Hockenson ($4,955,306) on bye this week, he moves up to TE12. The reason that I feel like this is a freebie is that Conklin has been used much less in the past two games with Zach Wilson ($8,787,670) than he was in the first three games with Joe Flacco ($3,500,000).

Starting QBGamesTargetsReceptionsReceiving YardsTDsDOFPs
Joe Flacco32418138135.8
Zach Wilson2635208.2

The only statistic in which Conklin is doing better with Wilson than Flacco is yards per reception (17.3 vs. 7.7), but since Conklin received four times as many receptions per game with Flacco, he still had more yards per game with Flacco than Wilson (46 yards vs. 26 yards). The Week 5 Blutarsky (0.0 Dynasty Owner fantasy points) on one target doesn’t help Conklin’s case to be in your Starting lineup this week either. Finally, the matchup against the Green Bay Packers’ defense doesn’t help either as the Packers have only allowed 15 receptions and 136 receiving yards to TEs this season. Many Dynasty Owners have picked Conklin up over the past few weeks as his roster percentage is up to 76.17%. He was only rostered in 24.7% of Dynasty Owner leagues back in late April after his new contract took effect and the 30-day off-season free drop period was over.

Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week – Chloe’s Centers vs. The Deep Attack

This week, we have a battle of brand new Dynasty Owners who are both undefeated so far this season. One of them is even ranked in the Top 25 in the Chase for the Ring. Neither one of them needs any help with who to draft or who to put in their Starting lineup vs. leave on the Bench. However, both of these rookie Dynasty Owners appear to need help with the finer points of Dynasty Owner in order to maintain their perfect record and, in the case of Chloe’s Centers, stay near the top of the Chase leaderboard.

First, let’s take a look at the match-up and projected score in the League of Legends (League #174404).

Not surprisingly, Chloe’s Centers is favored. The expected margin of victory is 31.17 points, which is in line with how both teams have performed this season. Chloe’s Centers is averaging 170.4 points per game, while The Deep Attack is averaging only 129.1. The Deep Attack has benefited greatly by playing opponents who have had trouble scoring points as the average Points Against for them is just below 100 points (99.8).

So far this week, neither team has scored any points as they did not have any Bears or Commanders players on Thursday night. However, The Deep Attack has two players on their Bench on bye (down to just one after this screenshot of the projected score was done). They had Jamaal Williams ($3,000,000) in as a Bench RB, since replaced by Pierre Strong ($1,093,358), but still have T.J. Hockenson as their Bench TE. This is problematic as they have 26 players on their roster plus one on Injured Reserve and just over $11 million in salary cap room. There are plenty of TEs available in the Free Agent Auction for less than that salary, so they can add another TE without dropping anyone.

Chloe’s Centers have a full Starting lineup and Bench, but made what I would say is a questionable move to get there. They dropped injured RB Rashaad Penny ($5,750,000) and paid a $1,437,500 drop fee in the process of picking up Cade Otton ($1,123,486) to be their Starting TE this week. Dropping Penny is fine, but they didn’t need to do it and incur the drop fee as they have the minimum 25 players on their roster and just enough salary cap room ($6,245,776) to afford to keep Penny. In the off-season, they could have dropped Penny once he became a NFL free agent or when he signs a new contract if they don’t want to keep him. Few other Dynasty Owners have dropped Penny as he is still rostered in 94.04% of Dynasty Owner leagues despite being placed on Injured Reserve for the rest of the 2022 season.

The point of this is not to call out either Dynasty Owner. In fact, it’s just the opposite. I’m hoping that both of them and other Dynasty Owners will make better roster decisions in the future after reading this Match-up of the Week. I would love to see Chloe’s Centers continue to appear on the Chase for the Ring leaderboard and maybe even crack the Top 10. For The Deep Attack, if they can continue to win, I’ll start putting together a list of undefeated Dynasty Owner teams in a couple of weeks and hope to see them on it.

Read the weekly Tuesday recap article and find out who wins and where Chloe’s Centers are on the Chase for the Ring leaderboard. If you want to be Match-up of the Week or see a good Match-up in your League, go ahead and send me a tweet (@SteveVT33) and maybe it’ll be featured here in the future.

Conclusion

If you got this far, thank you and I hope that you came away with something to help your Dynasty Owner team. Whether it’s a player who you should Start or Bench this week or have a better appreciation for how to manage your Dynasty Owner roster to maximize your chance to win every week. It’s not easy. In fact, it’s a lot more work than almost every other fantasy football league out there. The roster size, salary cap, and Bench scoring in Dynasty Owner will all stretch your fantasy football abilities and your roster to its limits. Especially now that we are into the bye weeks section of the NFL season.

In addition to this weekly recap article, Dynasty Owner has plenty of other great content to help you win your League Championship and maybe become our 2022 Chase for the Ring Champion. Here’s our 2022 in-season publication schedule:
